What is The Building Code?
The Building Code is a set of minimum standards for the design and construction of buildings. It is intended to ensure that all buildings are safe, structurally sound and fit for purpose. The Building Code is developed and maintained by the Department of Building Control (DBC), which is a division of the National Department of Public Works.
The Building Code applies to all new building work, as well as alterations, additions and repairs to existing buildings. All building work must comply with the relevant provisions of the Building Code. failure to do so may result in prosecution.
The Building Code sets out minimum standards for a wide range of topics, including:

– Fire safety
– Accessibility
– Energy efficiency
– Materials and workmanship
Compliance with the Building Code is achieved through the use of approved plans and specifications, and by carrying out work in accordance with these documents.
Types of Roofing Regulations
There are three types of roofing regulations in South Africa:
1. The National Building Regulations (NBR): These regulations set out the minimum standards for construction in South Africa and are binding on all builders, developers and homeowners.
2. The National Housing Code (NHC): This code contains minimum standards for the design and construction of housing, which must be met by all local authorities when approving building plans.
3. The National Standard for Residential Roofs (NSRR): This standard provides guidance on the design, materials and installation of roofs in residential buildings. It is not mandatory, but is widely used by roofing contractors and architects.

Qualifications:
All roofing contractors in South Africa must be registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC). In order to be registered, contractors must have a valid certificate of registration issued by the NHBRC, which can be obtained by passing an examination and paying the required fees.
In addition to being registered with the NHBRC, all roofing contractors must also be members of the Roofing Industry Association of South Africa (RIASA). The RIASA is a voluntary association that promotes and protects the interests of its members, who are engaged in the business of roofing.
In order to become a member of the RIASA, roofing contractors must meet certain criteria, which include having been in business for at least two years and having a satisfactory record with the NHBRC. In addition, members must adhere to the RIASA Code of Conduct.
